Phantom of the Opera - An Award Winning Experience

The Phantom of the Opera is a household name in the world of arts and entertainment today. The longest running and the most successful musical of all time, Phantom has captured the imagination of millions around the world.

The Broadway play Phantom of the Opera is based on Gaston Leroux’s horror novel of the same name. The plot revolves around Christine Daaé, a gorgeous soprano who becomes the love interest and object of obsession of a horribly deformed musical genius, simply known as the Phantom of the Opera.

The musical genius loves Christine and eventually starts composing operas for her, which propels her to stardom. She gets engaged to Raoul, a childhood friend and the new patron of the opera. Despite her engagement, the Phantom continues to love her and remain obsessed with her. In a final attempt to win over Christine, the Phantom kidnaps her and threatens to kill Raoul unless she agrees to live with him forever. Christine kisses the Phantom and tells him that he is not alone. Overwhelmed by the rare show of love and compassion, the Phantom sets them free and disappears, only leaving his mask behind.

What makes the Broadway play Phantom of the Opera so great is the fact that the characters are written so well that people can understand the reason behind the actions of each character and relate to them. Be it the deformed genius, the innocent girl, or her kind hearted spouse, you can understand why they do what they do at any given time.

Similarly, the somewhat taboo subject of a deformed man’s obsession with a young girl is handled in the classiest way possible. At no point can you hate the Phantom completely, despite his reproachable behavior. You are made to see the man for who he really is – a tortured soul who longs for love and affection. So, when the young girl gets drawn to the Phantom despite her engagement to another man, you can completely understand the reason behind her actions.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music has also played a key role in making the Phantom of the Opera such a staggering success. The flamboyant yet soulful score has won over everyone – right from the average opera goer to the harshest of critics.

The cast and crew of the play put their heart and soul into every performance and it really shows. For instance, the Phantom’s makeup alone takes over two hours to put on and 30 minutes to remove. Each performance involves the participation of 130 cast, crew, and orchestra members.

Over the years, the Broadway play Phantom of the Opera has received many accolades including three Laurence Olivier Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and seven Tony Awards. The musical has been played in 35 countries around the world in 15 different languages. Over 140 million people have watched it and the show has grossed over $6 billion, making it one of the most financially successful entertainment events in history. Yet, the Phantom still remains as fresh and enjoyable as it was when it debuted three decades back.

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical/opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The music was composed by Lloyd Webber, and most lyrics were written by Charles Hart. Additional lyrics were written by Richard Stilgoe. Alan Jay Lerner was an early collaborator, but he withdrew after completing work on a single song, Masquerade, and died shortly thereafter. The central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius. The Phantom of the Opera opened in the West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It is the longest-running musical in Broadway history, the second-longest-running West End musical, and arguably the world's most financially successful single entertainment project to date. Phantom won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford won the 1986 Olivier and 1988 Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical. The show has been seen in 149 cities in 25 countries, and has played to over 100 million people. With total worldwide box office receipts of over £3.5bn ($5.1bn), Phantom is the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time. The New York production alone has grossed US $715 million, making it the most financially successful Broadway show in history.
